This is a State forest, not the national park

Styx River State Forest is a Forestry Corporation of NSW working forest on the Northern Tablelands, east of Armidale. It is not New England National Park, not Cathedral Rock National Park, and not Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. Those are NPWS. Point Lookout, and the park camps people look up from Waterfall Way, are not camps in this forest. Forestry Corporation names two places. Upper Wattle Flat is open grass near river pools. Lower Wattle Flat is the one where a two-wheel drive is not recommended, a van needs a four-wheel drive, and there is no power. Both start from the Armidale–Kempsey Road, then north onto Styx River Forest Way. Follow the signs for the one you mean. They are not the same camp. Entry and camping are free and first-come. You cannot book a site here. This site is an unofficial operator’s manual in the State Forest Guide Australia network. Check Forestry Corporation before you drive.

What kind of forest day?

Best for

Free first-come camping beside the Styx; a dog under control in the forest; Upper’s open grass if that is the signed place you want; a 4WD if you are heading for Lower.

Skip if

You need a reserved pad tonight; you wanted Point Lookout or a booked NPWS camp; you are towing in a 2WD and hoped Lower would be fine; you need power in the forest.

Upper Wattle Flat

Open grass near river pools in tableland gums. Free. First-come. Lower Wattle Flat is the other camp — read its warning before you tow anything.
